Writer's topic block

We have all had a time when we wanted to write but just couldn't think of anything to write about. Well, with some preparation we can fix this from ever happening again. There are many ways to keep from ever running dry on topics to write about. Make a list, answer questions, write about a skill you have, and many more. Let's take a look a little closer at these and a few more ways to prevent breaking down in the middle of a rush.

The power of a list

For every method I am going to mention, keep a list of the topics. This will be the all important book or notepad that you should always keep on yourself. If you're sleeping, shower, or something along those lines keep it close at hand. There have been times I have woken up and taken a note to write about something. There have also been times that while I am in the shower I have to step out to make a note about something to write about or to add a note or thought about something else. If you need a notebook, this works great for me:

The Topic List

In your notebook, start a list of all the topics you can think of right now. If this is none, oh well - you will have some soon enough. Now, take a couple minutes and think about five articles or hubs that you would enjoy reading about. Write these topics down on your list of things to write. Everyone couple days do this and keep writing more on your list. I personally try not to have fewer than five ideas on my list that I still need to write about. Do you enjoy writing hubs on the history of events? Then find significant events in the niche that you enjoy the most. If you have some topics that stick out to you then highlight them as a priority.

Answering questions to get topics

If someone asks you a question that explains an in-depth answer, then write a hub about it. I have people who ask me about heaters, chain saws, shooting, guns, and many other things of this nature. Suddenly, I have probably at least a hundred hubs to write just one general questions such as, "What's the difference between these heaters?" Put whatever people are asking you on the list. And if someone is pissed at you and asks, "Are you stupid." Write a hub about it and twist it to something humorous and make fun of that person a little. One big thing about any type of writing block is it is generally tied into stress of some sort - try to have fun.

Write about your mad skills

I made a dozen origami tulips for my wife when we first moved in together. I wasn't going to see her for a day or two and I had a couple hours before heading to work. I took the time to make a dozen tulips on various colored paper, I made stems, and put them all in a vase. I didn't have any marbles and water wouldn't actually work, so I put light blue paper through the paper shredder and stuffed the vase with it to make it look like water. We have our five year anniversary in couple months and she still has those dozen tulips. I could write a hub explaining everything and then follow it up with how to write them. Or I could tell all about wanting to give my wife something nice and sincere, then link to another page or site that I write for to give instructions on how to make an origami tulip.

Do you make picture frames, place mats, do you recycle, or grow plants? There are so many things that you may not think anything of, but others are wanting to learn how to do it and you could write a very nice article about how to do some of these things. Sit down and think of things that you do that some people do not know how to do. If you know a couple people who do not know how to do it, there are probably quite a few people who have no idea but want to learn.

Writing the news

If you are up to date on currently happenings in the world then go ahead and write an article on what is happening in the news. Or make it up and have as much fun with it that you can, just make sure that people know you are joking around. I am imagining War of the Worlds and would hate to see that happen again. You can also go to Google Trends to see what people are searching for. This will be a little bit behind, but the option is there.

Poems

Write some poems if you do not usually. This can break up the grind of doing full length hubs. Sometimes it helps just to change things up for a bit. I am not suggesting that you will make a huge amount of money off of these. It doesn't seem like Hubpages make a lot of money from poems, but it is better than nothing and if you want to move it to another site down the road you can.

Keyword searching

One way to look for topics is to go to Google's Adword. Check out keywords that you would like to write about. Start looking for what word order or words make good money and then come up with a plan to use those keywords to write an article. Some of the keywords I see are paying close to $20.00 per click on average. Which is not bad. Combine this method with others to come up with unique topics and take time to enjoy what you are writing for.

List of prevention

The biggest tool for not running out of topics is the list. You should be able to add at least a dozen topics on our list. I do not know anyone who actually write a dozen articles a day either. So you should be coming up with topics that you do not have time to write. This is the dilemma I like to have instead of sitting there trying to come up with some idea about what to write about. Write it all down and keep your notebook on you at all times.

Thank you. I have run out of ideas a couple of times and these are some of the things I do now to keep from running out.

If I want to learn about something specific I also do an article about it and research it to learn.
