Save Money this Growing Season
Every day there are more people looking at how to save money. Some people have turned to growing their own vegetables and fruits, I am one of these people. And there are people who have always grown plants and will continue to for a very long time. Whichever camp you are in, I have some money saving ideas that I hope will help save you money this growing season and many more to come. One thing can often be true when it comes to saving money - What is good for you wallet is also good for the environment. I am going to go over three different ways that you can save money this growing season as well as for many to come as well as help the environment out a little too.
Being Green
Free and Easy Block Lifters
A block is the dirt or medium that seedlings are grown in. Over the years I have tried everything from dumping the blocks out of the tray onto my potting counter to using a fork to "gently" pick the block out. Pretty much every method I have used has damaged the roots to some degree. In most cases this doesn't kill the seedling and it grows after transplanting it.
An easy way to prevent root damage is the plastic bags that so many grocery stores bag your items in. It seems like the stores give out too many of these bags out and I do hate having to throw them away. Take the plastic bag and cut it into one inch strips and place it in the container your blocks go into. Cut the ends so that there is enough sticking out that you can grab the edges and simply pull it out.
Free Starter Pots for Seedlings
Free Starter Containers
Instead of buying blocks or pellets every year, save some toilet paper tubes and cut them in half. The makes a great place to put dirt in for the seeds and it cost nothing. The cardboard can be used as a very small raised garden as well and it will deteriorate into the soil too.
This is a simple and easy method for keeping waste down as well as the cost for mini-pots. This is one of the best methods that I have seen in quite awhile. This method of mini-pots goes very well with the Rotisserie Greenhouse.
Rotisserie Greenhouse
Rotisserie Greenhouse
I was recently turned onto the rotisserie chicken that some of the chain food stores sell. I can get a whole chicken for $4.98 with a free plastic rotisserie container that easily doubles as a small greenhouse. Some of the plastic cake containers also work well.
There are some people that simply fill the bottom in with dirt and plant seeds in them. I would only do this for some herbs though. Take small containers or blocks and place them in the recessed bottom of the container. This make transplanting them later much easier and less root damage as well.
I use the rotisserie containers more than I use cake containers. There are several reasons for this. One I am more likely to buy a chicken than I am a cake. Two the chicken container has a recessed bottom and I like this more than just the flat bottom of the cake containers. It helps keep water in better and it makes it easier to place the mini-pots.
